Born in 1993, Kevin Casey is a Vancouver based, Irish sculptor and architect, whose work is focused around light and shadow. These themes are explored and captured through his cast plaster reliefs which provide a canvas for the light and shadow of their surroundings to bear onto.
Through Kevin’s architectural education he discovered his joy for the process of making. For Kevin, the process can be viewed as a form of meditation, one which insists on the constant presence of the maker, allowing for a sense of calmness to be brought about from within. It is the ambition of the artist to bring about this feeling within the viewer, through the intrinsic values of the geometry and materials used in his art.
To Kevin these pieces of art are not created as much as they are unearthed. They represent spaces that have always existed in the mind, transformed into physical space through the medium of casting. Given that the work only takes physical form once the plaster has been cast, it is constantly evolving up until this point. The duality between the permanence of the finished work and the impermanent nature of the mental space from which it was born, is something which is reflected in the contrast between the permanence of the material and the impermanence of the light which engages with it. When the environment within which the work is located changes, so too does the nature of the work itself.
While the setting plays an important role, so too does that of the viewer. It is Kevin’s belief that the art is constructed from three components, the physical piece, the setting in which it is placed, and the mental state of the viewer. When any one of these three things changes, the art too changes, allowing for an art of perpetuity to evolve.
